Crua Outdoors is creating the best night’s sleep you can get in the wild with their temperature controlled, light blocking and sound dampening modular tents. Gone are the days when you wake up in the middle of nowhere, freezing, with no sleep.

Formed in Ireland, Crua’s revenues more than doubled in 2020, in spite of Covid, and they’ve been busy launching six new products in 2021. They believe they are now positioned and ready to move from startup to rapid growth, and this round of funding will be instrumental in enabling that growth.

We had a chat with founder Derek O’Sullivan to get the lowdown on Crua.

Can you tell us a bit about your career so far and what brought you to start your own business?

My formal education was a combination of engineering and business and I started my career designing container cranes! Then I worked for grocery chains as a PM and finally ended up in the insulation business.

How did you get into the tent world and what is Crua’s mission?

I founded Crua Outdoors in 2015 to solve a problem that had been bugging me since my childhood. Why did tents have to be so cold, hot, bright, noisy – uncomfortable? I always felt that the lack of a good night’s sleep had a negative impact on my outdoor experiences.

Today Crua is the market-leading modular and insulated tent, sold to more than 100 countries – and we’re just getting started. The potential for growth is enormous. It turns out that a comfortable night’s sleep is actually important to campers!

Can you tell us a bit about Crua’s growth to date?

We’re delighted to be able to say that we’ve delivered over 20,000 products to over 100 countries. And we’re just getting started…

What is your competitive landscape like at the moment? How do you differentiate?

We offer an option kind of between camping and glamping – an insulated space that offers the best night’s sleep that you can get in the wild. We also design modular systems – so your tent can grow as your needs do…

How would you describe your team and what do you look for in new hires?

We’ve added some great people to the team in 2021. The people are everything. We look for the right people, with the right attitude – who prefer dealing in solutions, not problems. 

What has been the biggest learning for the company so far?

Focus is essential.

What part of Crua’s journey are you most proud of?

That we’ve already built a trusted brand and a large community in a relatively short period of time. And that we solve a problem for campers…

What can we expect next in the way of product development, features or partnerships?

We’ve some very exciting partnerships to announce in 2022. I could tell you what and who, but then I’d have to…!

When you’re not working, what do you do in your spare time?

Sports – GAA, Martial Arts, and I like to read.

What is one of your favourite books or podcasts?

Just finishing The Clifton Chronicles, by Jeffrey Archer. He’s a fantastic author. I also tend to read a lot of biographies.

Where is one of your favourite places to holiday?

Anywhere in The Alps.
